Here we take a look at Everhood 2, a psychedelic action-adventure RPG and a sequel that stands on its own. Though unfamiliar with the first game, I was captivated by Everhood 2. There are similarities to Undertale in aesthetics but its unique, rhythm-based combat akin to an "inverse Guitar Hero" where players collect colored glyphs makes this series special on its own.
The game tasks players with slaying a mind dragon in a bizarre universe, offering early access to the final boss but encouraging exploration for upgrades. Its 8-bit retro visuals are vibrant and the ever-shifting environments keep things fresh. While the combat is central, its simplicity is seen as a strength, unlike typical turn-based RPGs.
The game boasts a fantastic, genre-bending soundtrack reminiscent of early PlayStation/Xbox era music, which significantly enhances the experience. Despite potential repetitiveness in gameplay, the engaging story exploring existential themes, the colorful art style, and the compelling music make Everhood 2 an "indie gem" worth playing, especially for fans of retro and unique RPGs. It's available on PC and Nintendo Switch.
