Hammer 95's debut title, Mullet Madjack, is a high-octane, retro-futuristic first-person shooter with roguelike elements that successfully captures the feel of classic arcade games. Playing as 2090s cop Mullet Madjack, you're tasked with rescuing a hostage across 10 stages, each with 10 randomly generated floors culminating in a boss fight.
The game's unique twist is a constantly depleting 10-second timer, which can be extended by getting kills, forcing fast-paced and strategic gameplay. Upgrades are offered between levels, adding to the roguelike formula. While not a true roguelike on normal difficulty, harder modes offer permadeath.
Despite a somewhat thin plot, the game shines through its immersive atmosphere, blending late '80s/early '90s aesthetics with futuristic technology, reminiscent of a retro Miami Vice. The simple controls (jump, kick, shoot) contribute to the fluid and engaging experience, even amidst the chaotic on-screen action.
While the visual intensity can sometimes obscure the action and level repetition might occur, the increasing difficulty and the option for a true roguelike experience on higher settings provide lasting appeal. Mullet Madjack delivers a nostalgic yet fresh experience, recommended for both FPS enthusiasts and those who crave the thrill of old-school arcade action.
